It's always tough to have that first conversation with somebody you're dating, especially if they live far away from you. Or maybe the date went really well -- do you call them? Or send a text? One decision everyone seems to agonize over is what to wear on dates. This might seem like a simple or frivolous concern, but it isn't! I've been dating my boyfriend for five months now and believe me, I agonized over this one. We met online at a dating website. He lives in the USA and I am here in Canada about 7 hours away by plane. My friends and family all told me not to bother dating a guy that far away, but I ignored them and gave it a shot anyways. We've been dating long distance for five months now and things have been going really well! He's the sweetest man I've ever met, checking in with me every day, sending flowers on Valentine's Day and always showing up to all of my birthday celebrations even if he has to work the next day. The only problem is figuring out what to wear when we go on dates... When we first started dating we would video chat all the time while wearing our pyjamas. It was easy because you don't have to think about what you're wearing or whether your hair looks nice -- it's like dating a friend! When we did meet in person for the first time, I wore jeans and a sweater just to be casual. Even though we were dating long distance at that point, I still felt like I had to dress up because he was coming into town for an actual date night. The next time he came to visit it was winter so I wore my warmest coat and boots... but there wasn't any snow on the ground so everyone thought I looked silly! That's when we realized that dating long-distance really is different than dating someone locally. It would be safe to say that most people who live near each other don't feel comfortable dating in their pyjamas or their winter coats (unless it's super cold), while dating somebody long-distance you can wear anything that is comfortable or makes you feel cute. The last time my boyfriend visited me I wore a cute tank top and these new jeans I just bought. It was summer here, so he didn't mind the lack of layers too much! We had a really nice dinner at one of my favourite restaurants... But when we got back to his hotel room things got interesting! At first it seemed like there was nothing out of the ordinary about what we were wearing -- he took off his shirt but kept on most of his pants, and I kept on all of mine (as usual). But then after an amazing night together in bed he looked at me with this devilish grin on his face, and told me he wanted to try something... That's when it all went wrong. My boyfriend looked down at the floor next to the bed where he had thrown off his shirt, then back up at my eyes, then down again -- still no sign of that naughty top! Just as I was about to give up hope his smile got even wider and he pulled out my tank top from underneath the sheets. And sure enough, there was his own shirt right under there too! We laughed really hard because dating long distance means you can wear anything in bed (or not wear anything if you prefer). Of course this isn't true for everyone... But dating online is like dating around the, so who knows what sorts of things you might find under the sheets. When dating long-distance your date's clothing doesn't matter as much because you can never see them -- that's why I always say dating online is like dating around the world! You can wear anything in bed (or not wear anything if you prefer). Most people would probably feel very awkward dating someone wearing their pyjamas, but since it's an online date who cares? The key to dating online is to never over-think things, and this includes what you wear. Don't fret too much about how you look -- just be yourself! Your true love will fall for all of the amazing personas you've created throughout life; there was no need to create a different version of yourself for dating online. It's a very freeing experience knowing that you don't have to try as hard, and it allows us to focus on the fun parts of dating! After all, dating should never feel like a job interview, so why dress up as if you were going on one? In conclusion: dating long-distance is different from dating locally because you'll never see them again if things don't work out.
