Your bodies should be horizontal at 90 degrees (parallel with the floor), and if you're taller than your partner, bend over slightly so she doesn't feel like she's towering over you. One of you will steer but neither one of you should lead; it's more like steering a motorboat than steering a car. You'll dance lightly on the balls of your feet. If necessary, take small steps by crossing your back leg in front of your other leg briefly behind them to catch yourself if you lose your balance.
2) Jitterbug - The jitterbug is appropriate for any song with four beats per minute or more, and can be exciting to dance! Your bodies are more upright than they are in the waltz. One of you will lead but neither one of you should fully lead. If necessary, simply move your feet more quickly to keep up with the beat until you feel comfortable with the rhythm of this dance step.
3) Foxtrot - The foxtrot is a great dance for slow songs that have four beats per minute or less. It's also good for remixes where there isn't room for improvisation on the spot because it has rigidly defined steps which makes it easy to catch on for beginners. Your bodies should be closer together than they are in the waltz and squared facing one another. One of you will lead but neither one of you should fully lead, and the steps aren't rigidly defined so simply move with your partner until you can pick up on the rhythm and both dance it comfortably!
4) Rumba - The rumba is appropriate for songs with four beats per minute or less. One of you will lead but neither one of you should fully lead. Your bodies are more horizontal than they are in the waltz or jitterbug. Women, take a step forward by pushing off from the ball of your front foot while taking a small lateral step to your right, simultaneously swinging your left arm behind you and your right arm in front of you! Men, begin by taking a small step forward by pushing off with your back foot while stepping to the side (to the left for women, to the right for men), simultaneously bringing your arms together in front of you.
5) Swing - The swing is appropriate for any song with four beats per minute or more. Your bodies are close together so dance lightly on the balls of your feet. One of you will lead but neither one of you should fully lead; it's more like steering a motorboat than steering a car. Keep strong eye contact throughout the dance to maintain proper rhythm!
After practicing at home, try attending local dances where dating partners can practice these steps all night long.
