The dating pool in Los Angeles is unique. There are enough people to date, but the dating culture makes dating weird. The dating pool is also completely submerged in technology, leading to some very unique stories about dating apps. This might be one of them…
I was on Tinder when I matched with an attractive girl who messaged me first. She asked what I did for a living and I told her that I was a writer at CollegeHumor, which made sense because everyone knows that writers just lay around all day being lazy and drinking coffee while they “write”. Anyway, she said that she was a model so I thought it would be cool if we could meet up sometime. She said yes! But sadly, she wasn’t interested in dating. Just sex, which was cool with me! We set up a date and met at Langer’s for pastrami sandwiches and had a great time. It was the perfect first date: we both got what we wanted!
After that first meeting I started to want more than just sex from this girl, though…probably because of my low self-esteem and neediness…but I liked her enough where I couldn’t just get over it by ignoring the situation. So I had to send her some kind of text saying “Hey, you know I think you’re pretty cool even if we aren't dating so maybe we can hang out sometime? Like friends...just friends...its cool if we don't have sex…lol”
Now, I know some dating advice articles will say that you shouldn’t ever reach out to a girl after she has reached out to you. They claim that girls get creeped out when this happens. But in my experience, that just isn’t true. Most of the guys on dating apps are really desperate and it is hard for them not to reach back out because they want a response so badly. Some dating experts will say “Don’t let her think you need her attention by texting her first again” but I completely disagree with this dating tip because it [removed] getting no reaction from a woman other than indifference or silence. So why would anyone recommend this? If you're dating, dating experts do give good advice while dating. But if you aren't dating, dating experts make absolutely no sense and should be ignored at all costs.
Unfortunately, my text back to this girl (the one I wanted more than sex from) didn’t get the reaction I was hoping for. Remember how she said that we couldn't date? It turns out she meant it! She never texted me again and did not answer any of my texts until I finally got fed up and put her on ignore (which is another dating tip: never put a girl on ignore because then they think you're desperate). The end result: we went from planning our second date to never talking ever again in less than 72 hours.
Here’s the dating tip I’m talking about: if you like a girl, let her know right away! Don't make her think that your only goal is sex (unless you really only want sex). Girls are smart! They can tell when someone likes them, and they don’t like it when guys try to get in their pants without dating them first. So why play games? If you’re looking for more than just sex then just say so…and be honest about it! Don't wait until after she's turned you down for dating to ask again to hang out as friends or whatever. That dating tip would have saved me from being ghosted by this girl...the one who said she was a model.
OK, dating tip over...back to the pastrami sandwiches...
Anyway, this dating advice article would be unethical if it didn’t give some actual dating advice like “be yourself” or “don’t act desperate” etc. So here is some dating advice that you can actually use: don't ghost girls; do not send gross pics; and only reach out if you want something more than sex (at least communicate that). If you follow this dating advice then you won't end up like me on Tinder while trying to get with a "model".
What are your thoughts on my dating story? Have any of your own experiences where dating experts were dead-wrong? Share in the comments!
