dating tips : Use clear photos of your face, ideally smiling # hushcupid.com
If you're dating online, chances are you've got your fair share of dating horror stories. One guy was so busy trying to impress me with his knowledge of The Devil Wears Prada that he totally missed the fact that I'm allergic to nuts! Another guy sent me a rambling email filled with typos and then said he didn't understand why I wasn't responding… Someone else asked if we could go out on Friday night because "he wanted to make sure our first date was the best"—um, what made him think it would be anything but? And one guy actually repeated my name wrong at least three times in the course of our conversation; by the time he finally got it right, I'd already decided dating him was out of the question. These dating disasters are all too common, but it's not just men who can commit dating blunders. Women can be blind to some dating faux pas as well—and sometimes they're not even dating faux pas per se, they're just things that make it clear she isn't interested in you. Some of these mistakes may seem obvious, but I've seen women make them over and over again—so don't beat yourself up if you've done them too. Here are nine dating slip-ups women make (and how to fix them). 1. Sending very impersonal emails with no personal element Example: "If possible, could we meet for dinner?" followed by a request for the guy's phone number. Linder dating coach Susan Babin says this is a dating mistake she sees women make all the time. It's an email, not a text message—act like it! Sending an overly impersonal email shows you're not interested in getting to know the guy. The fix: When you write him an email, ask him one or two questions about his interests or hobbies so he knows you've put some thought into the message before hitting "send." Even something as simple as asking what kind of food he likes will be more effective than trying to arrange your first meeting over email. And don't wait more than 24 hours to respond—if you do, he'll wonder why you didn't bother replying at all . 2. Being late Example: Showing up to a first date 45 minutes late without letting the guy know. It's not just dating etiquette that says being on time is important—it shows respect, says dating coach Julie Ferman . This isn't a good dating habit to have because you're leading with your lack of punctuality and togetherness. You could also come across as if you don't care about the person enough to show up to the date on time. Who knows, maybe he was planning on asking you to marry him , and if so, showing up later than an hour after you were supposed to meet doesn't really scream commitment! The fix: In dating, timeliness is next to godliness (and it makes for very short dating). To make sure you don't forget about him, pick an event to cue the time, like "meet me at 6 p.m." or "I'll be there at 7:30 p.m." 3. Being rude to servers Example: Not tipping a server despite getting good service because she assumes he doesn't need the money ($5 on a $20 meal). People assume dating etiquette is limited to chivalry and dating manners . However, treating service workers with respect is dating etiquette too—and dating coach Patrick King says it goes both ways. If you want good service in dating , treat the people serving you well! They can write so much about who you are based on how you act toward them (or not). The fix: If you don't leave a tip, you not only look like an [removed] but also make dating harder for other women who come after you. You could be dating someone who's employed by the restaurant and is married to the server! Your lack of dating etiquette might affect her life significantly . 4. Being rude to waitstaff (or anyone!) Example: Not smiling; not saying "please" or "thank you;" saying something mean about someone else in front of that person; talking about how much money she makes as soon as she gets a job. Julie says this is one dating habit she sees often with young women, and it's incredibly dating unwise to do , no matter your age. It's dating etiquette 101—treating people with respect. The fix: Be nice to everyone you meet, especially in dating! If you can't be polite, at least pretend you are until you get to know the person better. 5. Being obsessed with someone else Example: You constantly talk about your ex and how much happier he made you; or constantly checking on a guy who hasn't asked you out; constantly texting a guy who hasn't replied (because maybe he doesn't like me and I shouldn't text him anymore). Dating coach Julie says this is one of the most common dating mistakes women make because it's easy to fall into the trap of dating comparison. However, constantly mentioning that past relationship makes it clear that you're not ready to move on and dating someone else. The fix: If you're not dating anyone, say so—and then stop talking about dating. If you are dating someone, keep it private and don't talk about him in a negative way or constantly question why he hasn't done more/said more/agreed to more dates yet . 6. Sharing too much information Example: Telling a guy she's bisexual , uninterested in children, and loves anal sex all in the first date. Dating coach Julie says this is one dating mistake women make because they think they'll come across as cooler if they aren't afraid to share secrets. However, dating when you bare it all from the start can be overwhelming
