"So what do you want to read first?" I asked, wagging my library book at him. We were sitting cross-legged on the bed, side by side.
"Oh, it's your date." He smiled and held up his own book like a trophy. "I defer to your dating expertise."
"Well then," I said, "shall we start with foreplay?"
His eyes ran down the page of his novel as he flipped through it. When he found the chapter in question, he cleared his throat and began to read aloud:
"It was already hot enough that she could see her bare skin glistening in the moonlight filtering through the bedroom window …" His voice trailed off as he darted a look my way.
I narrowed my eyes and stared at him, intent on making him continue.
"You have to close your eyes," he said after a moment.
"No way." I shook my head firmly. "Don't stop now! What happened next?"
He held up a hand to ward off any further discussion, but I could see the grin tugging playfully at his lips as he turned his attention back to the book in front of him. He cleared his throat again and began to read once more:
"The warm summer wind blew across her naked body as she looked out into the dark night from her bedroom window …" He paused for a moment before going on: "She could feel herself getting wetter by the second as she gazed longingly at the man who was standing at her front door. "I knew it!" I cried triumphantly, dropping my book on the bed beside me. "You pick romance novels!"
"Wait, there's more." He held up a hand to stop my train of thought before I could jump to any hasty conclusions about what kind of books he read. He cleared his throat once more and continued reading: "She bit her lip in anticipation as she watched him move closer and closer to the window …" His voice grew softer as he went on: "He finally arrived, but instead of coming through her bedroom window like she had hoped …"
He paused and swallowed before going on.
"… he disappeared into thin air." With that, he snapped his book shut and dropped it onto the bed beside him with a laugh. "So what's your verdict?"
I stared at him in disbelief through narrowed eyes, but I couldn't keep up my angry expression once I saw how much fun he was having at my expense. Finally, I started to laugh too.
"Well you have to admit," I said, holding out both hands as if framing an imaginary headline for the newspaper, "that would certainly make prime dating material."
He laughed aloud then grabbed me around the waist with one arm and tumbled us over so that I was resting on top of him on the bed. Before
